GREAT FATHERS IN BLACK HISTORY * THURGOOD MARSHALL

Thurgood Marshall was the first black Supreme Court Justice.  Mr. Marshall had two sons, Thurgood Jr.(Goody)  who is a lawyer and former deputy Counesl to Al Gore  and John W. Marshall who is the former Director of the U.S. Marshall Service.

On June 13, 1967, President Johnson nominated Marshall to the Supreme Court following the retirement of Justice Tom C. Clark, saying that this was “the right thing to do, the right time to do it, the right man and the right place.” Marshall was confirmed as an Associate Justice by a Senate vote of 69–11 on August 30, 1967.[10] He was the 96th person to hold the position, and the first African American. President Johnson confidently predicted to one biographer, Doris Kearns Goodwin, that a lot of black baby boys would be named “Thurgood” in honor of this choice.[11]

Marshall served on the Court for the next twenty-four years, compiling a liberal record that included strong support for Constitutional protection of individual rights, especially the rights of criminal suspects against the government. His most frequent ally on the Court (the pair rarely voted at odds) was Justice William Brennan, who consistently joined him in supporting abortion rights and opposing the death penalty. Brennan and Marshall concluded in Furman v. Georgia that the death penalty was, in all circumstances, unconstitutional, and never accepted the legitimacy of Gregg v. Georgia, which ruled four years later that the death penalty was constitutional in some circumstances. Thereafter, Brennan or Marshall dissented from every denial of certiorari in a capital case and from every decision upholding a sentence of death.[citation needed] In 1987, Marshall gave a controversial speech on the occasion of the bicentennial celebrations of theConstitution of the United States.[12]

GREAT FATHERS IN BLACK HISTORY * MALCOLM X

Since it is Black History month I want to profile some of the great African American history who have done great things but also have balanced  a steady family life and raised their kids.  These men have been an asset to their families, but also to the communities that they have served.

The first person that I want to highlight is Malcolm X.  We all know what Malcolm did for the community during the civil rights era.  But many not know that he was a dedicated father to 6 daughters and husband.  In fact, Malcolm’s wife Betty was pregnant with twins when Malcolm was assassinated in 1965.

TEENAGE GIRL THREATENS TO KILL HERSELF ON TWITTER…AND DOES IT

After reading about the apparent suicide of Don Cornelius earlier today reports have surfaced that a 17-year-old Houston, TX girl has taken her life after tweeting about her suicidal thoughts on Twitter and   Tumblr.  Ashley Duncan was a student at Bell Aire High School and had made several posts on the internet about getting a gun and a plan that she had to kill herself due to the pain that she was in.

Below are two posts and a picture from from Ashley’s Tumblr and Twitter.

if you know or have known what it feels like to want to die every minute second hour day week month year then you feel me. I’m not here to put my business out like y’all care or for y’all to feel sorry for me but this is the only way I can vent. Im not complaining because I know it’s people out in this world that has it a lot worse but what you don’t understand is I really have it bad. I might not struggle financially but I struggle emotionally and mentally and I think that’s the worst struggle. the only thing that made me happy is gone. So in asking why can’t it be my choice to die now? I’m miserable. I’m just a dead stoner pill head walking and nobody notices it but me. One day I won’t be here anymore and that’ll be the happiest day of my life but for the ones that say they love me its gonna hurt but fuck it I’m tired and I’m done with this life.

..I should’ve went through with my plan, I wouldn’t have to feel or deal. Like I said yesterday I’m tired as fuck and ready for this shit to be over and the shit I’m referring to is my life! peace ✌

Depression is a major issue that needs to be addressed.  There has got to be a better way of recognizing the signs and helping out the people who need it the most.   This young lady could have been helped, and I know that there are millions of other folks out there who are feeling the effects of depression.

I didn’t know Ashley or Don Cornelius personally but I know that we are losing people left and right of all age groups, nationalities, and class to the disease of depression.  If you can do something to save someone who you think is suffering, please help them!

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON DEPRESSION IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN AND LATINO COMMUNITY?

WOMAN ABANDONS HER TWO DAUGHTERS ON BUSY NEW YORK STREET

A single mother in New York turned herself in earlier today after police say she left her two daughters stranded on a sidewalk in Broooklyn.

Dalisha Adams, 26 has been charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Cops say that Adams’ daughters Dominae, 5, and Diani, 3 were spotted earlier this week wandering along a busy street in the Canarsie area of Brooklyn. An elderly couple saw the two children and called police because they were playing without an adult present.

When questioned by the police the older child told them her name and a vague description of her mother’s car and home, but could not give enough information for authorities to identify the mom. The litte girl told a news photographer “Mommy just left us on the sidewalk and drove away”

The mother claims that she left the girls with their grandmother inside of the neighborhood’s Bayview Houses. She says that Bertha Davia, who is the mother of the girls father agreed to watch them. The girls father has been accused of domestic abuse previously, and Adams said she did not enter the home because she feared he would assault her.

There were no visible signs of abuse, and the girls were dressed in hooded coats and UGG Boots. After being taken to a hospital the girls were turned over to child protective services. Authorities at child services apparently recognized the girls and told police who the girls mother is.

Police questioned neighbors who told them that they often heard screaming from the Adams home. They say that she could often be heard screaming “Shut the f*ck up” and threatening to punch her youngest daughter in the face. The neighbor also said that she heard the mother screaming “Stop crying. Shut the f— up. I’m gonna get you out of here”

Stories like this really tear at my heart. These babies seem to be caught in a situation where their mother obviously doesn’t care about their well being, and as far as we can see there is not a father present in the home. Prayerfully, these little girls will be placed in a home with responsible adults who care about them. They didn’t ask to be here. The mother needs to be held accountable for actions, and the grandmother needs to be investigated also. This story really makes me ponder why you have to get a license to drive a car but not to have a child.

NBA VIDEO * CHICAGO BULLS CARLOS BOOZER’S SON CHEERS FOR LEBRON JAMES

I am a HUGE Chicago Bulls fan, and Carols Boozer is one of the best players on the team. Well during a game on Sunday against King Lebron James and the Miami Heat Boozer’s sons flipped the script and started cheering for Lebron.

As a Bulls fans this one kinda hurt me to my heart, but it was still cute to see the lil man cheering on for the opposing team while wearing his dad’s jersey.

NICK CANNON SAYS HE WAS “BUILT FOR FATHERHOOD”, COVERS BLEU MAGAZINE’S MAN OF THE YEAR EDITION

Nick Cannon, who is married to Mariah Carey and the father of twins covers Bleu Magazine’s “Man Of The Year” edition.  In the cover story Cannon talks about how important his family is, and how he feels he was “built for fatherhood”.

Here are a few excerpts from the story.

On romance and Mariah Carey

“Mariah and I are both hopeless romantics.  We just made a pact to say that we want to be in this because we enjoy each other and we love each other…We want to be successful at being in a relationship; we want to have a good time.”

On relationships

“A relationship shouldn’t seem like something you have to work at; it is not a task.  We always wanted a fairy tale relationship…and the drama that normally comes with it, we [can] do without.”

On fatherhood

“I was built for fatherhood.  I grew up in a family with a lot of kids…Ihave taken care of kids my whole life.  As soon as my children were born, they became first and everything else became secondary.”

CHICK-FIL-A PRESENTS ‘DADDY DAUGHTER DATE NIGHT’

My daughter and I were at the drive through at Chick-Fil-A today and I noticed a sign promoting their “Daddy Daughter Date Night”.  I wasn’t sure what it was about(beyond the obvious), but after further research I found out that CFA is holding events in select markets promoting positive relationships between fathers and daughters .

This looks like a really good event for fathers to attend with their daughter.  I’m already a  Chick-Fil-A fanatic but knowing that they are  helping with the fatherhood initiative makes me have a greater respect for the company.

If you are interested in finding out more information about this event you can go to the Daddy Daughter Date website.

VIDEO * Q-TIP GETS A DNA TEST AND DISCOVERS HIS AFRICAN ROOTS

Rapper Q-Tip recently hooked up with the folks from OkayAfrica to conduct a DNA test that would tell him where his ancestors originate from. In the video Q-Tip swabs his mouth with…a q-tip and begins to guess where his family tree began. He believes that he is originally from the Zulu tribe(that would be too easy) and has some Mongolian in the mix as well.

I posted this video because I think that it is important that we all become more familiar with our family ancestry. Our kids need to know more about where we come from and I think it’s good that OkayAfrica is recruiting celebrities to get down with the program.

GABRIEL AUBRY AND HALLE BERRY GO BACK TO COURT

Gabriel Aubry and Halle Berry are back in family court. Halle petitioned the judge to remove Gabriel’s visitation rights pending an investigation into child endangerment allegations.

Judge Scott Gordon heard arguments in the case this morning and said that a decision will not be mad in the case until Monday.

An immediate emergency order was not granted because the judge felt that the child would be safe until the hearing on Monday.

Judge Gordon did not grant an immediate emergency order for either side because he believed there are enough protections in place to keep Nahla safe until Monday’s hearing.

Halle’s nanny also lost her bid to have a restraining order taken out against Gabriel after the two got into an altercation earlier this week.

VIDEO * DON TRIP @MRDONTRIP PERFORMS “LETTER TO MY SON” LIVE IN NASHVILLE

Rapper Don Trip performed his heart felt single “Letter To My Son” last night in Tennessee. If you have never heard this song, you should take a moment to listen to what this man has to say as he pleads for the mother of his child to allow him to see his young son.
