Miami Heat point guard Dwyane Wade has started promoting his new memoir “A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball”. Wade posted a video on Youtube earlier this week to help promote his new literary venture.
Wade has made it widely known that being a single father is a major part of his life and he has taken on the cause of spreading the word about fatherhood across the country. Two years ago he gained custody of his two sons after a very nasty divorce from his wife Siohvaughn Funches-Wade.
In the video Wade discusses what it means to him to be in his kid’s lives. He says “My inspiration for writing this memoir would be to share my experiences of what I dealt with in life, most importantly, kind of how I dealt with being a father.” He also sheds light on what types of emotions he felt when writing the book.
Wade didn’t just write the book to tell his story, but he also wants to inspire fathers to give their all to raising their children. He says “I know how important it is when you bring a child in this world, for them to have their parents in their life, especially a father figure, a male figure.” Growing up on the South Side of Chicago Wade saw many children who did not have their fathers around and is now using his celebrity status as a way to bring families together. “It might bring some families closer, when they start looking at what I dealt with. It can be something that they can look at and say, ‘You know what, I never thought about this that way.’ So it’s a lot of different things that I just hope that my book can just do.” he said.
Like many men, Dwyane is still going through issues with the mother of his children. A few months ago his ex-wife was arrested and charges with kidnapping after she refused to return the two boys to their father after a court ordered visitation with her in Chicago.
